Day 365 - Laugh til it burns

New Year's Eve. It's a weird holiday, and I always struggle with it. Unlike December 23rd, the day of anticipation and hope, New Year's Eve feels like a holiday that is overly focused on the past and while simultaneously filled with pressure to make the new year better than what came before. It's a whirlwind of emotion with a heavy dose of alcohol and expectation not always a good recipe.

Tonight a good friend and I went to a comedy club to see a mutual friend perform. Laughter seemed like a great way to escort one year out and welcome in another year.

And then, to undo all planning I had done, we decided to burn away what we wanted to let go of in 2011, literally. Initially the idea was to write down what we wanted to let go of and lighting those statement on fire. But then I remembered that these types of ritual usually involved sage, but having no whole sage, I decided that using rubbed sage was an acceptable substitution. So after lighting the statements, we gave one a good sprinkle of rubbed sage. It smelled good, and it made us laugh.
